2014 World Broomball Championship Schedule Format

6 TEAM FORMAT: MASTERS / WOMEN’S / MIXED Categories: 6 TEAMS in each division.

STAGE 1: Round Robin Games. Within your category, every team will play every other team one time in a 5 game Round-Robin (RR). No overtime.

After 5 games the teams will be ranked in order from 1 to 6, based on total points. In the case of a tie in points, the ranking will be decided by the tie breaker criteria according to the revised rule book.

Stage 2: The teams ranked 1st, 2nd and 3rd will play in the “World Cup Semi-Finals” (WC SF), and the teams ranked 4th, 5th, and 6th will play in the “Hokkaido Cup Semi-Finals” (HC SF).
Note that this is a “3 team semi-final” which means that each team in the grouping will play the other 2 in their group, for a 2 game semi final. Each team will have one home game and one away game.

*Important*: Every team’s points will be reset to zero (BUT, previous points/ranking may be needed as a tie-breaker, so original ranking is important).

After the 2 game World Cup SF, the teams will be re-ranked in their grouping. The first place team and second place team will advance to the World Cup Gold Medal Game. The third place team of the World Cup SF will play in the World Cup Bronze medal game. Meanwhile, the top team from the Hokkaido Cup SF grouping will advance to the World Cup Bronze medal game. The 2 bottom teams from Hokkaido Cup SF will play a “Consolation” Final (which will decide 5th place overall).

All teams play exactly 8 games. 5 Round Robin, 2 Semi-Final, and 1 Final game.

All teams will play each other at least one time, and the Semi-Final groupings ensure that teams of similar levels will play each other more often.

Every team will play at least 1 of their first 5 games at each of the 3 arenas. Thereafter, arenas will be determined by grouping. All categories have the opportunity to play at all arenas.
Every team has an approximately equal number of “Home” games and “Visitor” games.

10 TEAM FORMAT - MEN’S Category: 10 teams divided into 2 divisions of 5 each (RED division and BLUE division).
The “seedings” made in the men’s category are based on past performances and expected performances, in order to ensure that both divisions are of comparable caliber to ensure the best level of competition.

Stage 1: In the PRELIMINARY STAGE, all teams from one division will play one game against each team from the opposite division, for a total of 5 games each. No overtime.
At the end of the Preliminary Stage, the teams will be ranked in order from 1 to 5 WITHIN THEIR DIVISION, based on total points. In the case of a tie in points, the ranking will be decided by the tie breaker criteria according to the revised rule book.

Stage 2: “WORLD CUP Qualifier/Quarterfinals”: Next, the top 4 teams in each division will play a Qualifying game to determine whether they will compete in the World Cup section or the Challenge Cup section. Teams play within their own division (Rank 1 vs. Rank 4, Rank 2 vs. Rank 3). Note that the 5th ranked team in each division will automatically play in the Challenge Cup section. Regular OT will be played if necessary.

The winners of each World Cup Qualifier/Quarterfinal game will advance to the World Cup section semi-finals. The losers of each game will compete in the Challenge Cup section, along with the 5th ranked teams from above.

Stage 3: World Cup Group Semi-Finals (WC SF):
The Quarterfinal winners will play in the World Cup Semi-Finals (within their own division). The Semi-Final winners will advance to the Gold Medal game. The semi-final losers will play in the Bronze Medal game.

Stage 3: Challenge Cup Group Semi-Finals (CC SF):
RED DIVISION Semi-Final: The Quarterfinal losers + 5th place RED division (after Preliminary Stage) will play a 2 game Round-Robin to determine Challenge Cup final games.

BLUE DIVISION Semi-Final: The Quarterfinal losers + 5th place BLUE division (after Preliminary Stage) will play a 2 game Round Robin to determine Challenge Cup final games.

*Important*: Every team’s points will be reset to zero (BUT, previous points/ranking may be needed as a tie-breaker).
After the round-robin, the teams will be re-ranked as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd based on total points. If tied, use normal tie break rules, then previous rank from preliminary stage if necessary.

Final Games Determination:
The 1st ranked team from RED Division Semi Final will play the 1st ranked team from the BLUE Division Semi Final in the CHALLENGE CUP GOLD MEDAL Game.
The 2nd ranked team from RED Division Semi Final will play the 2nd ranked team from the BLUE Division Semi Final in the CHALLENGE CUP BRONZE MEDAL Game.
The 3rd ranked team from RED Division Semi-Final will play the 3rd ranked team from the BLUE Division Semi Final in the CHALLENGE CUP “Consolation” or “5th Place Game”.
